Scalding Burn due to Accidental Swallowing of the Hot Water




Abstract
The scalding burns of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx can cause erythema that may progress to severe airway compromise. Airway consideration is the first management priority. The authors have studied 8 cases of patients of the scalding burn due to accidental swallowing of the hot water of coal briquette boiler from March 1982 to December 1988. The results were as follows
1. The scalding burn occurred all in male.
2. In monthly distribution, nearly all cases had occurred during winter season. (from December to next March)
3. The pain on swallowing and respiratory difficulties were chief complaints.
4. The oral cavity and supraglottic areas were the common sites involved in all of 8 cases. In 3 cases was also involved the upper esophagus.
5. On aspect of mucosal findings all of the cases showed congestion and edema. In addition 3 cases was also showed erosion and ulceration.
6. Tracheotomy was performed in 3 cases.
We conclude that airway consideration with appropriate symptomatic medication is mainstay of a successful treatment in the scalding burn and prevention 1 s emphasized.
